Dear SASC Community,
We would like to inform you that SASC is transitioning from an active sports club to a scholarship award organization in 2027.
SASC was founded as a non-profit organization started in 1993 that offers a year-round basketball program of clinics, summer camps, league play, and tournaments for Asian community youth, and associates. SASC expanded its basketball program to include tennis and golf. Annually, SASC engages with Vancouver, BC basketball organizations in a friendly tournament. SASC has hosted basketball teams from Japan in cultural exchanges. The Club, through its coaches, teaches individual skill development and team play to gain leadership and sportsmanship. SASC youth learn valuable lessons in how to positively contribute to the community by the way of sports.
The founders of SASC (Barry Mar, Rod and Kris Kawakami, Wilson Geong, Lisa Mar, Norman Mar, and Kevin Chinn) organized SASC to serve the Asian community as a place for youth to learn leadership skills and build character through the lessons of sports. Participation in sports became valued lessons applied to active community engagement. SASC mentored its players and coaches (via in-house training). SASC has a proud history and its legacy is established.
The 2025-2026 season marks the 33rd year of operations for SASC. The years have gone by quickly bringing with it amazing experiences and memories of sports, camaraderie, community involvement and service and international relationships! The Board of Directors and the Operations Committee truly value and enjoy being involved with SASC.
With that being said, over the past decade enrollment in SASC’s teams and programs have declined. SASC is competing in terms of time and costs, with many other sports, academic activities and opportunities available to today’s youth. These past few years SASC Board and Operations have worked to explore ways to reinvent SASC. The organizational challenges remain for continuing SASC basketball operations in terms of clinic enrollment, operations and board recruitment, Seattle Parks participation, gym space and cost.
2026-2027 will be the last basketball season year for active SASC operation as it transitions to a scholarship award organization. The SASC scholarship program and the first scholarship application will launch in Fall 2027 .The scholarship program will still have SASC’s mission at its core in awarding recipients who demonstrate leadership, character and community engagement. Stay tuned as more details will be shared closer to the launching of the first scholarship application.
It has been the honor and privilege of SASC’s Officers and Board and the Operations Committee, to serve and work with the community these past 32 years. The Board and the Operations Committee sincerely appreciate your participation and your unwavering support of SASC over the years. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank each and every player and family, coach, volunteer, organization, sponsors and donors, and all friends of SASC, for being a part of SASC’s very special community.
Sincerely,
SASC OFFICERS & BOARD OF DIRECTORS
